Hello, I’m Sandesh Bhat, also known as Sandy in the ham radio community. I am a dedicated and seasoned ham radio operator based in Goa, proudly holding the callsign VU3FGJ. With a record of over 27,000 QSO log entries and contacts across 162 DXCC entities, I engage in ham radio operations daily, continually refining my skills and expanding my knowledge. I am committed to being available 24/7 for emergency communications, always ready to assist when needed.
Professional Background
My professional journey began in the management and operations sector, where I accumulated extensive experience since 2000, holding director positions in various companies. Building on this foundation, I went on to own and lead a prestigious hedge fund company for 12 years. During this period, I specialized in High-Frequency Trading (HFT), arbitrage, and algorithmic trading, achieving significant success in the finance industry. I also ventured into real estate investments, cultivating a long-term portfolio that added to my financial stability.
After being a workaholic for many years, I reached a point of financial satisfaction that allowed me to take early retirement. This decision was driven by a desire to enjoy my passions and focus on living life fully. My background includes an MBA in Operations, Marketing, and Finance from a reputed institute, complemented by specialized training in Quantitative Analysis from World Quant University.
Journey into Ham Radio
My fascination with radio communication began in childhood, driven by a deep curiosity about radio waves and their ability to traverse vast distances. This fascination evolved into a full-fledged passion when I began overlanding and off-roading in 2004, which introduced me to VHF operations. Over the years, I have undertaken numerous innovative projects and shared my knowledge extensively within the ham radio community. My operations are not merely about making contacts but about experimenting, embracing continuous learning, and significantly contributing to the amateur radio community.
State-of-the-Art Shack
My ham radio shack exemplifies advanced technology and high performance. It features the Yaesu FTDX 10 as my primary transceiver, renowned for its exceptional signal clarity and sophisticated features. For mobile operations, I utilize the Alinco DM-DR500, a versatile crossband and Digital transceiver paired with a Diamond SG7900 high-gain antenna, enhancing both VHF and UHF signals. The Riverflow Pro 2 battery ensures reliable power for extended operations, while the HackRF One with PortaPack facilitates advanced signal intelligence and experimentation.
Antennas and Innovations
My antenna setup is diverse and cutting-edge, including a Multiband HF Cobweb, a Multiband Fan Dipole, and high-gain vertical and Yagi antennas for VHF/UHF operations. Additionally, I have engineered a portable multiband V antenna with telescopic whips that also functions as a delta loop, showcasing versatility and efficiency. Experimentation has always been at the core of my pursuits; I have built and tested over 100s of antenna prototypes, continually seeking to enhance performance and reliability.
Expertise in Machine Learning and Algorithms
Leveraging my extensive background in machine learning and algorithms, I have developed sophisticated methods for forecasting radio signal propagation using data on solar and magnetic activity. This advanced approach, honed through years of financial analytics, provides accurate and reliable propagation forecasts, significantly enhancing the operational efficiency of ham radio communications.
Awards and Achievements
My dedication and innovation in ham radio have earned me over 800 awards, a testament to my commitment and expertise. Some of these awards are proudly displayed in the awards section of this website.
Community Engagement and Mentorship
Beyond my technical endeavors, I am passionate about mentoring and sharing knowledge with aspiring ham radio enthusiasts. As the founding member and secretary of the Goa Radio Amateurs Society (GRAS), I take pride in regularly organizing sessions, classes, and demonstrations at colleges and schools. My mission is to inspire and educate the next generation of ham radio operators, guiding them in exam preparation and deeper exploration of radio communication.
I have developed a comprehensive resource section and a vast knowledge base for mentoring students, equipping them with advanced tools and resources available on the society’s website and my personal website. This commitment ensures that students have continuous access to valuable information and hands-on experience in the field of ham radio.
Other Hobbies
Skydiving: I am a skydiver with 26 jumps, earning my A license for solo diving from Sky Dive Austral in Mauritius in 2014. Unfortunately, due to health reasons, I no longer qualify for sports accidental medical insurance, which is essential for skydiving, and therefore I have decided to discontinue my skydiving activities.
Paragliding: I hold a PG3 grade in paragliding from Mantra Flying in Kamshet. My journey began with a PG1 certification in 2012, followed by PG2 in 2013, PG3 in 2018, and a powered paragliding (paramotoring) grade PPG1 in 2018 from Wings N Flights in Pune.
Off-Roading and Overlanding: I have been off-roading since 2010. My passion for overlanding started in 2004, exploring remote and challenging terrains.
Robotics and Drift Racing: My interest in robotics began in 2002, leading to various projects and innovations. Since 2015, I have been actively involved in drift racing, enjoying the thrill and precision of this motorsport.
Drones: I have been flying drones since 2008 and currently pilot the DJI FPV with Goggles 2 and a Cinelog 35 with a TRX Flysky Max, enjoying both the technical and recreational aspects of drone flying.
